Below is the actual amount spent on two separate trips to Iceland – one traveling solo and one with my partner. The first is my most recent trip with my partner in the winter of 2018 where we rented a car. Below, is my first trip to Iceland when I visited by myself in the summer of 2015, taking public transit.

2015 Trip to Iceland

Currency: Icelandic Krona (ISK/kr), Canadian Dollar (CAD), US Dollar (USD)
Budget: $2,000 CAD
Actual Amount Spent: $1,578.44 CAD*
*not including gifts, souvenirs, postcards etc.

Dates of Travel: July 21 – July 25 2015
Length of Stay: 4 days
Purpose of trip: Leisure

Base fees:

  • Flight: $973.06 CAD (flight from Prague, returning to Toronto through Icelandair)
  • Baggage Fees: Included
  • Transportation to/from airport: 2,400 ISK x 2 = 4,800 ISK

Day One: Reykjavik

  • Accommodation: $68.26 USD (one night at Loft Youth Hostel in female dorm)
  • Transport: 0 (Flybus 2,400 ISK)
  • Food/Beverage: 2980 + 900 = 3,880 ISK
  • Grocery: 578 + 845 = 1,423 ISK
  • Admission: 800 (Hallgrimsrkja) + 1500 ISK (National Museum) = 2,300 ISK

Day Two: Laugarvatn

  • Accommodation: $25.58 USD (one night at Laugarvatn Hostel in a co-ed dorm)
  • Transport: 400 (Strætó to bus terminal) + 260,00 (Strætó to Laugarvatn) = 3,000 ISK
  • Food/Beverage: 400 + 600 + 470 = 1,470 ISK
  • Admission: 0

Day Three: Laugarvatn

  • Accommodation: $25.58 USD (one night at Laugarvatn Hostel in a co-ed dorm)
  • Transport: 0
  • Food/Beverage: 4550 + 450 + 570 = 5,570 ISK
  • Groceries: 1,027 ISK
  • Admission: 3060 ISK (Laugarvatn Fontana with 10% hostel discount applied)

Day Four: Reykjavik

  • Accommodation: $80 CAD (one night at an AirBnB rental with a private room)
  • Transport: 0
  • Food/Beverage: 1090 + 900 + 1320 + 1275 = 4,585 ISK
  • Groceries: 657 ISK
  • Admission: 1250 (Phallological Museum) + 1200 (National Gallery) = 2,450 ISK

Day Five: Reykjavik

  • Transport: 0 (Flybus 2,400 kr.)
  • Food/Beverage: 1450 + 860 + 1540 + 1230 = 3,973 ISK

Totals:

  • Accommodations: 119.42 USD (hostels) + 80 CAD (AirBnB) = $235.71 CAD
  • Transport: 4,800 ISK (airport transport) + 3,000 ISK (Strætó) = $75.70 CAD
  • Food/beverage out: 19,478 ISK = $189.03 CAD
  • Groceries/misc: 3,107 ISK = $30.15 CAD
  • Admission: 7,810 ISK = $75.79 CAD
  • Flight: $973.06 CAD
